The Use and Misuse of ACT for OCD, presented by clinical psychologist Max Maisel, PhD, will explore the application of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), while delving into the theoretical foundations of ACT, the Psychological Flexibility Model, and its six core processes. This training will examine the connections between ACT and traditional OCD treatments like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), highlighting their shared elements, and will evaluate the benefits of incorporating ACT techniques in OCD therapy, including defusion, acceptance, present moment awareness, values clarification, and committed action. Additionally, potential risks and misconceptions of using ACT for OCD will be addressed. This training includes a case presentation, experiential exercises, and metaphors to enhance learning. A recording of the event will be provided to paid participants following the event.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe 4 benefits of adding ACT based-interventions into a traditional ERP approach to treat OCD.
  2. Describe 2 common pitfalls of using ACT to treat OCD and explain how to navigate these pitfalls.
