Event Description

Perfectionism is a trans-diagnostic process that causes, maintains, and exacerbates a wide range of mental health disorders and can interfere with the effectiveness of therapy. Both clients and therapists can struggle with unhelpful perfectionistic patterns such as setting very high standards, fear of failure, self-criticism, procrastination, checking, and avoidance.

This two-hour workshop will explore how to treat perfectionism using an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) approach. Trainer Jennifer Kemp will present a contextual behavioral framework for understanding and treating perfectionism and will demonstrate how to apply functional analysis and ACT processes to intervene with common unhelpful perfectionistic patterns.

Participants will learn the specific skills needed to address the core processes of unhelpful perfectionism and help their clients live their best ("imperfect") lives. Scripts, templates, and handouts will be provided to aid clinicians in building psychological flexibility and self-compassion in perfectionistic clients. Participants will also be invited to explore their own personal experiences of perfectionism, self-apply interventions, and examine the functional relationship between their unhelpful perfectionistic habits and anxiety, stress, and burnout.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Describe a clear and concise functional contextual behavioural formulation of helpful and unhelpful perfectionism

2. Explain the development and maintenance of unhelpful perfectionistic patterns in their clients and themselves

3. Identify treatment strategies that can build psychological flexibility and self-compassion in people struggling with perfectionism

Additionally, all attendees will receive a discount code from publisher New Harbinger to purchase Jennifer’s book, The ACT Workbook for Perfectionism. Disclosure: Jennifer receives royalties from the sale of the book.
